Yard Services Made Easy

Everything You Need to Know

Landscaping Austin, TX

It’s time, and you know it!!!

Your garden is calling you. “Make me pretty, show me some love,” it whispers.

But where do you start? Well… you are about 5 minutes away from finding out.

Now, before you start calling landscapers to get estimates, and drive yourself crazy, do yourself a favor and figure out these 5 things about your landscape design. Let’s make this yard-upgrading process easy for you and your landscaper.

If you want us to help you with the process, give us a call.

  • To Irrigate or Not Irrigate? That Is the Question

No water, no life, right? Well, not exactly…

While a good irrigation system brings more planting options, not having one doesn’t mean your garden is doomed. It just means you’ll likely want to lean towards Xeriscape (zeroscape), native, and drought-resistant plants when designing your garden. Knowing if you have an irrigation system and if water gets to the areas you want to upgrade is key.

Pro tip: Don’t trust your memory and willpower to manually water your plants unless you’re a robot-level organized human being and never go out of town for more than a couple of days. Even a basic irrigation system with a basic controller can make a huge difference.

  • Got Some Sunlight?

You see a beautiful flower. You know exactly where you want it to be planted. You plant it there. It dies within two weeks. Sounds familiar?

It might be because it didn’t get the right amount of sunlight. An often overlooked yet super important issue is the hours of sunlight your yard gets. Matching the types of plants to their preferred sunlight exposure can make a huge difference. It doesn’t have to be super accurate. A general idea of how many hours of sunlight different areas of your yard get is usually enough. But if you want to get it down to the minute, you can use websites like www.suncalc.org and see how many hours of sunlight your yard gets. You would also want to consider the canopies of trees and tall bushes and their impact on sunlight exposure.

  • Deer, Are You Here?

Alas, our eternal “frienemy”. The deer. So cute to the eye and so devastating to the garden (if not planned right). It brings pain just thinking about the countless amazing garden designs that end up inside deer stomachs. And while no landscaper in their right mind would say, “This plant is completely deer-proof,” there are plants that are usually pretty resistant to the deer’s vicious appetite. Knowing which areas of your outdoors (if any) get visits by deer will help you and your landscaper design and plant properly.

  • Ongoing Maintenance

This is the most important aspect that so many people miss. It is as important (if not more important) to maintain your garden after the installation as it is to have a beautiful garden in the first place. And unless you are a garden-head who has the time to invest in your outdoors, please, for the love of sod (see what we did there?), hire someone to do it for you. We may know a company 😉

It will be heartbreaking to see your beautiful outdoors, which you just spent a good chunk of change upgrading, turning into an eyesore in the blink of a month.

  • What’s Your Style?

Of the millions of words written about the different design styles, there are 3 concepts we think you should think about when zeroing down on your yard design;

  1. This is your garden, so please let your freak flag fly and design a garden you would love to see every day!
  2. You don’t have to commit to one style and one style only. Different areas of your outdoors can have different styles.
  3. The style you choose will determine the amount of time (or money) you’ll need to maintain your outdoors after the installation. For example, if you are looking for a relatively low-maintenance design, you may want to consider xeriscape, drought-tolerant plants, or even a wild native-plant garden. If you just love the looks of Royal English or Japanese gardens, just be aware that these styles usually require high skill and frequent maintenance.

If you get to this point, you know more than enough to turn your yard into an inspiring place. Now it’s your time to shine. If doing your own research and creating your own design sounds like fun (which it is), go for it. If you want Zazu Landscaping to help with your landscape design, it would be our pleasure!

  1. Personalized Outdoor Living Space: Professional designers can tailor your garden to suit your lifestyle, whether you want a tranquil retreat, a vibrant space for entertaining, or a family-friendly area for kids and pets.
  2. Enhanced Curb Appeal: First impressions matter. A stunning front yard design can make your home stand out in the neighborhood and leave a lasting impression on visitors.
  3. Seasonal Enjoyment: With a well-thought-out garden design, you can enjoy your outdoor space year-round. Experienced landscapers know how to select plants and features that offer beauty and interest in every season.
